Everyone has burning questions about life. Mysteries we wonder about but don’t always have clear answers for. Think about your biggest questions about existence, purpose, or the world around you. Write a blog post where you share at least two of your most burning questions about life and explain why these questions matter to you.

Prompt response: My first question is How did life on Earth begin? This question matters to me because it's what is connected to everything and how everything first came to be on Earth. My second question is, what happens after we die? This question specifically matters to me because I think it's a question many have wondered about many times in life. Thinking about it matters because it reminds me that we should always value our time, no matter if it's good or bad moments. Summary: Today, we learned about the future of American society. Reflection: Today, I learned about my place in American society.

What is the most creative thing you have ever made? Share what it was and explain why it stands out as your best work.

Prompt Response:  The most creative thing I ever made was a 50-flower bouquet with many different colors and decorations. It stood out as my best work because it wasnt just pretty and big. It made my friend happy to receive the bouquet as a present, and the emotions meant much more to me than the looks of the pretty bouquet. Summary: Today, we read about how a girl wanted to fit in more and be more American. Reflection: Today, I learned that you should always be yourself instead of wanting to fit in with a certain group.

Describe a time when you felt completely lost.

Prompt response: A time I felt completely lost was when I was in math class, and I didn't understand the problems that we were working on at all. I saw everyone else around know what to do, but I didn't even have a clue how to solve the problem. The teacher went over it again and explained it, but I still didn't get it, no matter how hard I tried. Me not being able to understand made me feel so lost about what I was even supposed to do or even learning about. Summary: Today, we learned about others' cultural identities. Reflection: Today I learned everyone is different, even if they come from the same culture.

Describe how gender roles or patriarchy influence your identity?

Prompt response: As a girl, Gender roles have influenced my identity by how people see me and what they expect me to be like. For example, girls are often expected to be a stay at-home mom and clean the house, while boys are encouraged to come home to food being served already. We as girls are also often expected to dress classy and professionally and be focused on how we look. These expectations can make me feel like I need to fit in to be considered a normal girl instead of being myself. Summary: Today, we learned about how gender roles are seen. Reflection: Today I learned that no matter how you're supposed to be seen, just be how you're comfortable being seen around.

Describe a meaningful family tradition unique to your culture and explain how it mirrors or contrasts with the cultural identity themes of expectations and roles in "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid.

Prompt response: One family tradition that my culture does is celebrating Christmas on the 24th and not the 25th of December. One of the reasons why that is, is because my family is catholic and we see it as the arrival of Jesus. His birth was celebrated on the 24th of December. Another tradition connected to that is, after any celebration, party, or gathering, we tend to come back the next day to eat leftovers, we call it "recalentado". I enjoy it because my whole family always says the food tastes better the next day. It contrasts with the cultural identity themes of expectations from "girl" because I feel like in girl it is more strict,t and if expectations aren't set, it can affect and disapprove of her culture. I'd like to say my culture is a little less strict and freer.  Summary: Today, we answered a prompt and answered how our traditions are similar or different. Reflection: Today, I learned that any expectation can be placed on you, and sometimes i...

Reflect on how your cultural heritage shapes your daily expectations, inspired by "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid.

Writing prompt: My cultural heritage influences my daily expectations, shaped by the norms of my culture. Similar to the "Girl", my expectations are my mother's expectations. Things like how to cook a certain way, not being able to talk to boys, how to sit when wearing a dress, and many more. Some things I don't agree with because sometimes I want to be myself, but I know that some of these norms my mother also had to follow when she was my age. I also realize that many people's norms are similar to and different from mine, which is why I have some expectations towards them and myself.  Summary: We read the script "Girl" and analyze it as a class. Reflection: I learned that having expectations is both good and bad. Especially within your culture, expectations will be put on you, but it is up to you how you want to take those expectations.
